6 Writing Tips From John Steinbeck

1. Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day, it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.

2. Write freely and as rapidly as possible and throw the whole thing on paper. Never correct or rewrite until the whole thing is down. Rewrite in process is usually found to be an excuse for not going on. It also interferes with flow and rhythm which can only come from a kind of unconscious association with the material.

3. Forget your generalized audience. In the first place, the nameless, faceless audience will scare you to death and in the second place, unlike the theater, it doesn’t exist. In writing, your audience is one single reader. I have found that sometimes it helps to pick out one person—a real person you know, or an imagined person and write to that one.

4. If a scene or a section gets the better of you and you still think you want it—bypass it and go on. When you have finished the whole you can come back to it and then you may find that the reason it gave trouble is because it didn’t belong there.

5. Beware of a scene that becomes too dear to you, dearer than the rest. It will usually be found that it is out of drawing.

6. If you are using dialogue—say it aloud as you write it. Only then will it have the sound of speech.

Greetings Blogosphere!

Been awhile since I’ve posted- working hard on a pilot script. Something shiny and new has come to the online universe: Measured Influence. The concept itself is not new, but a recent application has brought the process into the spotlight. The controversial topic encourages people who use social media to consider how their material permeates through their audience. Who am I reaching? What does my audience do with my data once I put it out to them?

Klout, a site that measures and ranks users’ Influence in the online community, is the most recent and perhaps most fair iteration of Influence Meters. Klout doesn’t look at how many followers or friends a user has, but opts to collect data on how people use the content a user posts (comments, re-tweeting, re-posting, linking, etc.). Klout compiles this data daily and provides a figure based on a scale from 1 to 100.

By Klout’s own admission, the system is far from perfect, but they are consistently working to improve the formula.

The next question is why should we care about this at all? Why concern ourselves with online Influence? And some believe the whole idea of Rank is fascist and a dangerous path.

From a business perspective, I see great value in measuring my influence. Soon Klout will be able to show me exactly where my social media strengths and weaknesses lie, allowing me to easily improve in areas that are lacking. This goes further toward increasing my audience, and creating an active audience. This goal applies whether I’m selling a product or promoting myself.

From a social perspective, Influence will play a greater role as social media grows. The idea of rank is not to claim one person is better or more popular than another, but rather it provides the user with a clear picture of what his/her posts and comments do for others.

Another angle to this idea of Influence are the Perks. Klout is constantly acquiring items from major companies to award their users for their Influence, and in the hopes these users will talk about the items/experiences garnered. It’s the online equivalent of an A-List celebrity sporting designer dresses and accessories on the red carpet. And the Perks begin at all levels of Influence, not just reserved for the top dogs.

I realize this all sounds like a big ad for Klout, but it isn’t. I discovered this site a little over a month ago, and decided to give it a try- I’m curious like that.

Needless to say, in that short time my Influence has increased by a lot. I’ve gained valuable Followers on Twitter and added Friends on Facebook. I’m enjoying my exchanges and communications more now than ever before. I credit the measured Influence process for much of this. And Klout is not the only ranking site out there, but they do seem to have a formula that works to provide a true picture of a user’s online Influence.

There is controversy around the whole idea of rank, but to the naysayers I offer this: give it a try before passing judgment on the process. Like anything else, Influence can be used for good or evil, and we have the freedom to choose our path.
